Voyage Baltimore: Inspiring Conversations with Snehal Massey of SPM Law

Today we’d like to introduce you to Snehal Massey.

Snehal, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story is a bit more unconventional (or rather at least I think it is). I decided to pivot my marketing career amid its upward trajectory and attend law school because I wanted to help children and families during their breakups. I quit my lucrative marketing position and attended law school full-time (which was the first time I attended school full-time since I worked my way through undergrad and attended as an evening student).

During law school, I was very strategic about choosing paid and unpaid opportunities in family law positions, so I got a wide array of experience. I worked at various government entities (Department of Social Services – CPS, Office of Public Defenders, clerked for a circuit court judge), private law firms, and even participated in my law school’s family law clinic and the Center for Children Families and Courts. As a marketer at heart, I understood the intangible importance of networking and believed that all these positions would, if nothing else, ensure I made contacts in the legal field – which boy did they pay off.

I like to credit each of my positions after law school graduation as a result of networking efforts during and after law school. For example, during law school, I interned for a circuit court judge, who then hired me as a clerk for my first job after law school (interesting fact: my Judge even married my spouse and me, and our child was born during my clerkship year). After that, I worked as an associate for 2 prominent boutique family law firms in the Baltimore area—opportunities that came directly from my involvement in the local legal community.

I was fortunate to learn from some of the area’s premier family law attorneys and gained tremendous trial experience during my early years. As a result of a series of unforeseen medical issues after the COVID-19 pandemic, I was forced to take a leave of absence in late 2021 – which pushed me to launch the now-thriving SPM Law.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has surprisingly been less bumpy than anticipated. The most challenging part is managing the business (all that comes with it) while providing the superb lawyering experience we strive for.

The learning curve of balancing the business and lawyering sides has undoubtedly been steep, yet I’m so privileged to be on this journey. These challenges have pushed me well outside of my comfort zone. I’m all the better for it!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
SPM Law is an all-women firm that strives to provide legal services efficiently and empathetically. We provide client-centered representation personalized to our client’s needs while maintaining professional representation. We are a firm that starts and ends our representation of clients with what is best for the family’s future. We believe no family law attorney or family court judge can know what works best for your family better than you do. That’s why we work with the client, to determine the options for optimal resolution.

We will ask what needs you have now for your future to feel secure and predictable. What goals do you have for your family’s future? Our recommendations about the best approach – whether in or out of court – are guided by the client’s vision of their future. We pride ourselves on making the transition during a difficult time in a person’s life a little easier by providing legally sound, practical advice rooted in compassion and experience.

Who else deserves credit for your story?
I am incredibly fortunate to have a very supportive spouse who has been instrumental in ensuring my legal career is successful – from supporting me at the very beginning when I switched careers and decided to go to law school to the present day with my leap of faith into entrepreneurship.

I am so very lucky to have cultivated a group of bad-ass sisters-in-the-law (and non-lawyer friends) who have been my cheerleaders, mentors, and supporters – there simply are too many to name but I am so thankful for each of them for their presence, and impact on this journey. I remember when I first mentioned that I was considering going out on my own, I was met with nothing but encouragement and also tons of “it’s about time” to “let me know how I can support you”. This truly helped make my decision a bit easier to know that even though I was going out as a solo practitioner, I wouldn’t be alone, per se. I speak to at least one or more sisters-in-the-law each week whether it is to run a case strategy past them or just to vent – having that support system has been invaluable.

Last, but certainly not least, I am so grateful for cultivating a team of very passionate, driven, and, supportive women who are integral to the success of SPM Law. I’ve been very privileged to build a team of professionals who embody the culture I have strived to create.
